The first in what was a planned but unfulfilled series on "Living Painters", Fry's Duncan Grant attempts to explain the value of Grant's work. Ultimately, Fry decides that it appeals because it is "entirely natural and unaffected" and because of its spontaneous and charming character. Fry suggests that Grant's oeuvre has a "personality" quite apart from that of the artist.
