[Monk's House]
19 September, 1923
Dear Duncan,
I enclose two photgraphs [sic] which I have received from Newbery as I think you ought to see them. I imagine that they are or one of them The Still Life (Ottoline), but (1) surely you dont[sic] want both? and (2) if so which and (3) do you think that they will reproduce well. The photos do not seem to my eye very deep or to have that clearness upon which the getting of a good block appears to depend.
We have now got the Lemon Gatherers. We still want something to take the place of the Swimmers which is 3. on your list. Mrs Joad wrote to you yesterday, I think, about Helen Rowe. Therefore if you select one the enclosed Still Lifes, we [?]ti only require two more (to take the places of the Simmers Swimmers and Helen Rowe) in order to complete the 24.
Will you let me know (to Monk's House) by return about these points? And if you select one of the photographs, will you return it so that I can send it off to the blockmaker?
Yours | Leonard Woolf [signature]
