Dear Mr Gollancz,
Fry was yesterday at last well enough to make it possible for us to have a full discussion of the subject and I saw him and one or two of the artists mainly concerned. We discussed the matter thoroughly and I am afraid it became quite clear that any scheme for a joint enterprise would not be feasible. I think therefore that we must go ahead with our vol-ume of Duncan Grant and follow it up with the other artists of that school if it becomes possible and any living French artists which you have not in hand and we are prepared to do. I will of course keep you informed of what we propose to do so that there may be no possibility of any clash. I am most anxious to avoid anything of the kind.
In many ways I am sorry that this should be the result, particularly as I have to thank you for the friendly way in which you approached and have treated us.
Yours sincerely | Leonard Woolf [signature]
