This Hogarth Essay (Second Series, no. 8), which originated in a dispute with Virginia Woolf, discusses the prospects of modernist literature; for Smith, contra Woolf, contemporary writing could not hope for greatness, as it did not exemplify that interest in words which, for him, preceded the greatest ages of English literature. Michael H. Whitworth contends that the views Smith expresses in this pamphlet were later caricatured by Woolf in Orlando's Nick Greene (see "Logan Pearsall Smith and Orlando").
