Dear Mr Kitchin,
We were going to publish your book next week and it is all ready, but we have had the most extraordinary series of misfortunes and I am afraid we must postpone publication until after Easter. First our secretary got pneumonia for the second time in 12 months and three weeks ago had to resign. We have only just got a new permanent secretary. Then two weeks ago Angus Davidson was suddenly taken ill and had to go into a nursing-home. It will be another two weeks before he will be back at work. It would be a great mistake to attempt to publish until he returns, but that means that we could not actually bring it out until the beginning of April. The worst time to publish is just before Easter, and I have therefore decided, very reluctantly, to hold it up and publish on April 16. I am sorry but the last thing that I want to do is to bring out the book in a way which might damage its chances.
Yours sincerely | Leonard Woolf [signature]
