29th January, 1948.
Dear Mr. Koteliansky,
Further to our recent telephone conversation, I find that last July we received a cable from a Leon Lear of New York offering a hundred dollars for permission to use 'Stavrogin's Confession' in an anthology. Mr. Woolf accepted this and yesterday we received a cheque from Lear for £25. It would now appear probable that there is some connection between this man and Crown Publications, and we are investigating this.
Meanwhile, I am enclosing a cheque for £53.17.6d. which is the £25 from Lear plus all royalties and permission fees due to you up to January 31st 1948. A detailed royalty statement is also enclosed.
I will write to you again as soon

as we have untangled the Lear and Crown Publications situation.
Yours sincerely, | for The Hogarth Press Ltd.
