A biography of the medieval Italian politician and popular leader, Cola di Rienzo, who claimed to be the son of the Holy Roman Emperor but was actually the child of a washerwoman and a tavern-keeper in Rome. He inspired some famous poetry, including one of Petrarch's Odes and some poetry by Byron, whose life and work was Origo's own interests.
