This account of Montaigne's journey to Italy was discovered in manuscript in the 18th century. The book is thought to have been written partly by Montaigne himself and partly dictated to a domestic assistant who acted as his secretary (Forkey, "Montaigne's Trip to Italy, 1580-1581" 123). The letters contain observations about the living conditions in other parts of Europe and records of his own ailments, which were the main reasons for his travel.
